Pinay Rasta, not Medusa

Pinay Rasta, Not Medusa

This is a reprisal of a Nik Ricio illustration for the book History of the Burgis, a personal favorite, and a result of listening to Pinoy Reggae for days on end. I love the book because aside from its scrapbookish take on, well, the history of the Philippine bourgeoisie, the illustrations are bee-yoo-tee-ful.

This was done on newsprint, a new favorite because it's cheap, cheap, cheap and it reminds me of my college student publication days. Notice the rings she's wearing, hehe. :)

Color me your color baby.*

Crayons remind anyone of his/her childhood regardless if he/she was into drawing or not.

In my case, the start of the schoolyear meant a new box of crayons. I was happiest when I received my box of 64 Crayola crayons. And unlike other kids who sharpened their crayons so much that they could be considered deadly weapons, I indulged in the crayons that had worn-out tips. My motto was the more worn-out, the better. Crayons with sharp tips didn't quite deliver the smooth, even effect made by worn-out crayons.

I still keep a box of So Big Crayons on my office desk, which I whip out when I need to fight boredom or if I need to think. I actually got the idea from my ermat who turns to her coloring book and colored pencils when she's stressed or just plain bored.

This piece was inspired by the cover of Arnold Arre's Andong Agimat. No, the guy in the pic's not my boyfriend; he's a random guy in some random magazine. Wish ko lang. :P

Yo arboles de amor.

Here's something I created in a span of thirty to forty minutes. One of those spur-of-the-moment (f)art attack moments.

It's a collage version of a havec-inspired doodle I have in my notebook. I suck at cutting objects, but it was fun nonetheless. The brown background is plain bond paper soaked in cheapass coffee. I will make a fresh batch of this paper soon since I only have 3 pieces left.

I call this little piece "Safe na ba?" (Is it safe?), and it's posted in my office cubicle. A little reminder of sorts, hehe.

The Obligatory Welcome Note

As far as I can remember, I have always had a love affair visual arts. Mind you, it is and perhaps will always be a love-love relationship. No hatred involved although hatred can sometimes fuel my prolificness. But then again, that seldom happens.

Anyway, my fondest childhood memories involve art materials and my imagination. And as far as I can remember, my answer to the perennial question "What would you want to be when you grow up?" would be something that involved art. Through the years I have wanted to be a painter, an architect, a cartoon strip illustrator, a movie billboard painter, a comic book illustrator, a graphic designer.

So it still amazes me (sometime frustrates, depending on the day's mood and my current burn out meter) that I'm currently in a profession that does not actually involve such.

I would not want to go into details how this happened, but let's just say that obedience got the better of me. And what the "experience" has taught me is that I could be the most obedient daughter. Ever.

Anyway, these are some of the reasons why I spawned this little blog. I want this to be the venue of my everyday art adventures (although I can't really promise a post everyday, hehe)... and because I have the tendency to get too intertwined with corporate slavery and life's misgivings, perhaps this little baby shall serve as a reminder of my little artsy fartsy dream and what I enjoy doing most.

BTW, just a little FYI. I don't wear anything on my right hand except for a ring which I remove when I start drawing or writing or typing or Photoshopping. So if there's nothing on my right hand, it means I am currently in my artsy fartsy mode, creating something which will hopefully end up here or somewhere even grander.

And so dear visitor I hope you enjoy your visit and you come here often. Browse around, comment as you please. And hopefully, you'll keep coming back, hehe.

Oh and I leave you with a favorite line uttered by a favorite actor in a favorite movie, "Good morning starshine, the world says hello!"
